Fern’s deep, rhythmic snores in the back seat helped Slate relax as he drove down the long, isolated highway leading to Auburn Hills.

With nothing of interest or cause for worry found in Flannigan’s cottage, except some expired condiments in the fridge, he and Detective Courtney waited by their vehicles until Brea and Fern came back. They’d found one neighbour who lived in their cottage year-round who claimed they hadn’t seen Flannigan since the end of that summer, when he’d visited with a group of friends.

Courtney told them she’d put a BOLO out on his car before they split up and headed back to Auburn Hills, and although Slate worried about what Flannigan could be up to, it eased his mind to know Detective Courtney would join them at their group meeting and keep an eye on Fern while they were inside.

“We’re going to pick something up to eat on the way, right?” Brea asked.

Slate nodded. “Whatever you ladies want. Maybe text Detective Courtney to decide. I’m not hungry.”

“Ah, come on.” Brea sighed and rubbed at her neck. “You have to eat, babe, and if you don’t order your own meal, I know you’ll steal some of mine.”

They exchanged their first smiles since before they’d left the house that day—before they’d had any idea something might have been happening with Flannigan.

“Fine.” He sighed and glanced at his phone. “Before the meeting, I’m going to do a quick video call with Fox. I want to make sure everything’s good with her and tell her what’s up face to face. I won’t want to worry her needlessly, but she has a right to know what’s been happening.”

“I wish we knew what’s happening.” Brea glanced back at Fern, whose snoring patterns had continued since they were halfway home.

As they approached the sign welcoming their return to Auburn Hills, he assumed Detective Courtney would slow down with the speed limit, but she kept a quick pace ahead.

The perks of a police escort.

“I know Fox sent me a text when they landed, and when they got to the B and B, but I just want to make sure she’s good. Do you think I’m worrying too much?”

Brea shook her head. “Not with everything we’ve been dealing with. She was upset when she found out what happened to me the other night. I think it’s been unsettling for everyone. It’s sweet you want to check up on her.”

Slate took one hand off the wheel and entwined his fingers with Brea’s, resting their hands on the top of her thigh. She cupped the top of his hand with her other, and he could tell she was staring at him.

“I know you must have been an amazing dad,” she whispered.

He was caught off guard by the comment, but he squeezed her hand in acknowledgement of the compliment. It seemed to be an unspoken rule between them for the years they’d known each other that they wouldn’t discuss Slate’s wife or daughter unless he brought them up himself, or someone else did.
